Tour overview
9 Days Great Migration Safari
Every year around 1.5 million wildebeest, joined by hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle, move in a great circle through the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grass and water. This safari is designed to put you in the middle of it, with three nights in a seasonal camp that moves with the herds.
From December to March, the herds gather on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu to give birth, with thousands of calves born each day. Predators follow closely, making this the best time to see lion, cheetah and hyena in action. From July to October, the herds are in the northern Serengeti, where they cross the Mara River in one of nature's most dramatic spectacles.
The safari begins in Tarangire and the Karatu highlands, includes a night in the central Serengeti and ends with a game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater. Your guide keeps in touch with other guides to track the herds, so you spend your time where the action is.
Highlights
This safari puts you in the middle of one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles, with three nights in a seasonal camp close to the Great Migration. Depending on the month, you see thousands of wildebeest calves being born in Ndutu and the southern Serengeti, or the dramatic river crossings on the Mara River in the north.
With so many herds around, predator action is outstanding, and a sunrise hot-air balloon flight is an unforgettable optional extra. The safari also includes Tarangire's elephants and a final game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater.

Best time to travel
The migration is in the Serengeti all year, but its location changes. From December to March, the herds are in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu for the calving season, with peak births in late January and February. From July to October, they are in the northern Serengeti for the Mara River crossings. In April to June, the herds move through the central and western Serengeti.
Dry season (July–October)
The best time for river crossings, with dry, open plains and easy viewing, but also the busiest period.
Green season (December–March)
Calving season, lush plains, dramatic storms and superb predator action, with short showers usually in the afternoon. The long rains in April and May mean some seasonal camps close, but the Serengeti is quiet and beautiful.
