Destination Overview

Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife destinations. Formed by a collapsed volcano millions of years ago, this vast caldera shelters an estimated 25,000 large animals within its walls, including the Big Five. The crater floor combines grassland, forest, and a soda lake, creating an enclosed ecosystem where wildlife is concentrated and easily viewed. The surrounding Ngorongoro Conservation Area is also home to Maasai communities, adding a rich cultural dimension to every visit.

Your questions answered

Most visitors spend a full day on the crater floor. Overnight stays on the rim allow an early descent and a more relaxed pace.

Is Ngorongoro crowded?

It can be busy in peak season. Early starts and visiting mid-week help avoid the densest vehicle clusters.
